Following the Crowd Can Be Dangerous
By: Ted Brown
“Can the majority of people be wrong?” Throughout history, following the crowd has often led to disaster. Nations, kings, celebrities, etc. It’s better to stand alone with God, than be in a crowd without Him. Let’s look at some examples in Scripture when people foolishly went along with the majority.
The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh (mankind) had corrupted their way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, the end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Gen 6:11-13
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him. Exo 32:1” Moses asked who was on the Lord’s side. Only the tribe of Levi stood with him & 3000 men lost their lives Exo 32:26-28
And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! Num 14:2 As a result, notice what the Lord said to Moses concerning Israel. “They certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.” Num 14:23
For me, this is one of the most sobering passages in the New Testament. Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matt 7:13, 14
And this is the great tragedy ~ “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matt 7:22, 23
You may not be in a Mega church, but make sure the one that you are in, is the one that Jesus Christ built so that “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it”. Matt 16:18 Any organization you can “join” is not the church you can read about in the Bible. People today who “gladly receive the word” Acts 2:41 are added to the Lord’s church the same as they were during the 1st century. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about 3000 souls.” Acts 2:41 And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47
